How to Read Sargent Model Numbers: 10X, 11 Line, 7 Line, 8200 Mortise, 8800 and PE8800 Exit Devices

A Sargent model number lists the options, the series and function, the trim, the finish and, where needed, the hand, in an order set by each catalog. This page explains the numbers of Sargent 10X, 11 Line and 7 Line cylindrical locks, 8200 mortise locks and 80 and PE80 Series exit devices from Sargent's current catalogs, and how they appear in our product names.

How to read a Sargent model number

In outline, each catalog's How to Order chart reads from left to right:

  • Options, such as 60- or 12-. The lock charts note that multiple options may be selected.
  • Series and function, such as 10XG24 or 8205. Our lock functions guide explains the function codes.
  • Trim: the rose or escutcheon and the lever, by letter.
  • Hand and finish: the hand, such as RHR or LH, where the chart asks for it (see our door handing chart), and a Sargent finish number such as 26D. The 10X, 7 Line and 80 Series charts put the hand first; the 8200 and PE80 charts put the finish first.

Sargent cylindrical locks: 10X Line, 11 Line and 7 Line

All three charts read options, lock and function, rose, lever and finish; the 10X and 7 Line charts add the hand before the finish. The function code includes the line: 10XG04, 11G04 and 7G04 are each line's storeroom or closet function.

The rose letter comes first. The 11 Line catalog names its designs this way: OL is the O rose with the L lever, LP the L rose with the P lever.

LineRosesLevers
10XG, LB, L, P, MD, MB, ND, MW, BHW, VSLL
11 LineO, LB, J, L, P
7 LineLB, L, P, G, Y, MD, ND

Options that appear in our product names:

  • 60- and 70-: lock to accept a large (LFIC) or small (SFIC) format interchangeable core, with a disposable plastic core (see our SFIC vs LFIC guide).
  • LC-: lock supplied less cylinder.
  • 30-: lever to accept a Schlage fixed core cylinder, which is not provided.
  • 23-: 3-3/4 inch backset (10X and 11 Line).
  • 28-: the current 7 Line and 11 Line catalogs say the 4-7/8 inch curved lip strike is now standard and option 28- is no longer required.

All three catalogs describe the standard cylinder as brass, 6-pin, LA keyway.

Sargent 8200 mortise lock numbers

The 8200 chart reads options, series 82, function, voltage (required for functions 70 to 73), rose or escutcheon, trim, finish and hand. Standard roses are L, O, E and LN; escutcheons include WT, LS, LW1 and LE1; standard levers are A, B, E, F, J, L, P and W. So 8205 x LNL, from the catalog's packaging table, is the 8205 office or entry lock with the LN rose and L lever, and 8205 x WTL has the WT escutcheon. LB- adds an ADA extra large thumbturn.

Sargent 8800 and 80 Series exit devices: how to order and trim

The 80 Series chart reads options, device type, function, rail size, trim, voltage, hand, outside finish, inside finish, door width and, for vertical rod devices, opening height. Device types include 88 (rim), 87 (SVR), MD86 (CVR for metal doors) and 89 (mortise); our exit device types guide explains them and the rail sizes E, F, J and G.

  • Trim: ET plus the lever letter, as in ETL or ETP. ET trim sold alone has its own number: in 775-8 ETL 26D RHR 12VDC, 7 is the 700 Series control, 75 the function and -8 a suffix set by the exit device.
  • Options: 12- (UL fire label exit hardware), LC- (less cylinder), 55- (request to exit), 56- (remote latch retraction), 60- (accepts a Sargent LFIC).
  • Finish: per the catalog, exit devices are not offered in 14, 15, 26 or 26D; the device is then supplied in 32 or 32D, and 32D automatically when 26D is specified. The catalog's 8800 example has 26D outside and 32D inside.

Sargent PE8800 (PE80 Series)

PE88 is the PE8800 wide stile rim device. Its trim is WE (wide stile) or NE (narrow stile) plus the lever letter, and the outside finish comes before the hand: in 56- PE88 10 F WEL 26D RHR 644 32D 36, 644 is an optional strike and 32D the inside finish. PE8888 is a multi-function device with the trim sold separately.

Sargent finish numbers: 26D, 32D, 10BE

Sargent prints its own finish numbers next to the ANSI/BHMA numbers. From the 10X, 8200 and 80 Series tables:

SargentBHMAFinish
03605Polished brass, clear coated
04606Satin brass, clear coated
10612Satin bronze, clear coated
10B613Oxidized bronze, oil rubbed
10BE613EDark oxidized satin bronze, equivalent
15619Satin nickel, clear coated
26625Polished chrome
26D626Satin chrome
32D630Satin stainless steel

10BL is printed as 613L in the 10X, 11 Line and 80 Series catalogs but as 614 in the 7 Line, 8200 and PE80 catalogs, so check the catalog for your series. When a cylinder comes with a 10X, 11 Line, 7 Line or 80 Series product, it is finished 15 for 26D hardware and 04 for 10B or 10BE hardware. Our finish codes chart compares BHMA numbers across brands.
