How to Read Kwikset Model Numbers, Finish Codes and SmartKey

If you are matching a Kwikset lock or ordering a part for one, start with the model number. A number such as 740HFL RDT 15 SMT 6AL RCS names the function, the style, the rose, the finish, the keying, the latch and the strike. The sections below decode it from Kwikset's own documents and cover finishes, SmartKey, part numbers and door sizes.

How to read a Kwikset model number

Kwikset's Box Pack price book lists the parts of an order code, including quantity, function and style, rose design, handing, finish, keying, latch and strike. Its example, an order for 12 SmartKey Halifax levers in satin nickel with a round rose, 6-way adjustable latch and round corner strike, is written 12-740HFL RDT 15 SMT 6AL RCS:

CodeMeaning
12Quantity
740Function: entry
HFLStyle: Halifax lever
RDTRound rose (SQT is square)
15Finish: satin nickel
SMTSmartKey Security
6AL6-way adjustable latch
RCSRound corner strike

Kwikset's website shows numbers the same way, such as 740TNL 15 SMT for the Tustin keyed lever. The price book notes that handing (LH or RH) is required for dummy levers and interior packs with levers whose design is not symmetric; see our door handing chart.

Our product names may run the codes together. The Kwikset 720HFLRDT-15 is a 720 passage lever, HFL Halifax style, RDT round rose, finish 15.

Kwikset function numbers

The first digits are the function (see our lock functions guide). A selection from the price book's table, which lists more numbers per row:

NumberFunction
200, 720Passage, hall or closet
300, 730Privacy, bed or bath
400, 740Entry
405Lever keyed entry
488, 788Half dummy trim, surface mounted
660, 780, 980Single cylinder deadbolt
665, 785, 985Double cylinder deadbolt
687, 800, 818Single cylinder handleset

The letters after the function are the style. Kwikset's style abbreviations include HFL (Halifax), TNL (Tustin), MIL (Milan) and BL (Balboa) for levers, and P (Polo), T (Tylo) and SOK (Sora) for knobs.

Kwikset finish codes: 3, 5, 11P, 15, 26D, 514

The Box Pack price book lists Kwikset's finish numbers with the BHMA number where it prints one:

KwiksetFinishBHMA
3Polished brass605
L03Lifetime polished brass605E
4Satin brass-
5Antique brass609
11PVenetian bronze-
15Satin nickel619
26Polished chrome625
26DSatin chrome626
514Matte black-

Kwikset's catalog adds 18G (gunmetal) and two-tone finishes such as 514/4, matte black with satin brass. For 11P the price books differ: the Clear Pack book prints BHMA 643, the Box Pack book none. Some of our product names add a BHMA number that Kwikset's tables do not print, such as 622 (flat black) in "622/514 Matte Black", so match a finish by Kwikset's own number. Our finish codes chart explains BHMA numbers across brands.

SMT, SMC or pin and tumbler

SMT in a Kwikset number stands for SmartKey Security. A keyed model can come both ways. The price book lists 405BL and 405BL SMT, and Kwikset's website describes 405BL 15 as a keyed Balboa lever with pin and tumbler, and 405BL 15 SMT as a keyed Balboa lever featuring SmartKey. Our catalog has both: the 405BL-15 Balboa lever entry lock and the 405BL-15S, named Balboa SmartKey lever entry lock.

Kwikset's product pages say SmartKey lets you reset the cylinder to work with any KW1 keyway key, and its SmartKey page says SmartKey is now also available in the SC1 keyway. The price books also print SMC: the Clear Pack book lists 955KNL 15 SMT RBP for the Kingston commercial electronic lever and 955KNL 15 SMC RBP for its SC1 version. Our key blank guide explains keyways.

What Kwikset says about SmartKey re-keying

Kwikset describes SmartKey Security as re-key technology that lets you re-key your locks yourself. From Kwikset's SmartKey FAQ and its Rekeying Manual:

  • Re-keying needs the current working key, the new key and the SmartKey tool, which Kwikset includes in all SmartKey packaging.
  • A new SmartKey lock comes keyed to the key in the box.
  • Only one key cut operates the lock at a time; the cylinder cannot be master keyed.
  • SmartKey cannot be used to re-key non-Kwikset locks.
  • A reset cradle can reset a SmartKey cylinder that was programmed incorrectly or whose key is lost.

For the steps, follow Kwikset's Re-keying and SmartKey support page, which links the full Rekeying Manual.

Kwikset part numbers: SKU and suffix

Kwikset's parts price book lists service parts by a SKU number, such as 83254, and a three-digit suffix. The suffix columns are finishes, cylinder colors (black, gold, silver) and No Finish, and suffixes are set part by part: black is -007 on the 83373 plug but -004 on the 83279 SMT cylinder.

  • 81706, thick door screw pack with spindle extension: -005 for 3, -006 for 15, -002 for 26 and 26D, -007 for 11P and 514. Ours: 81706-006 satin nickel thick door pack.
  • 83373, SMT exterior single cylinder plug: -007 black, -005 gold, -008 silver. Ours: 83373-007 black KW1 SmartKey cylinder plug.
  • 85172, SMC cylinder: -001 black, -002 gold, -003 silver. Ours: 85172-003 silver SC1 SmartKey cylinder.
  • 83254-001, set screw for passage, privacy and SMT entry interiors. The lever pages list 83257-001 for SMT entry exteriors and 83255-001 and 83256-001 for pin and tumbler entry interiors and exteriors. Ours: 83254-001 set screw.
  • 83260-001, Reset Cradle SMT; the SMC cradle is 85181-001. Ours: 83260-001 SmartKey reset cradle.

Kwikset backset and door thickness

Kwikset's price books define backset as the distance from the center of the door edge to the center of the 2-1/8 inch (54 mm) hole, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches in most cases. The Box Pack book's specifications list:

  • Signature Series knobs and levers: cross bore 2-1/8, edge bore 1, latch face 1 x 2-1/4, backset adjustable to 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches.
  • Door thickness for those knobs and levers: 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches standard. For the levers, 2-1/4 inch doors are optional on 720 and 740 models, and doors up to 2-1/8 inches on HFL, MIL, LSL, MRL and SAL.
  • Signature Series handlesets: 1-3/4 inch doors standard, 2-1/4 optional, not designed for 1-3/8 inch doors.

Our door prep guide explains cross bore, edge bore and backset.
