McKinney Hinge Templates: TA2714, T4A3786 and Electric Hinges

McKinney publishes its hinge templates by model and hinge height, with separate drawings for electric hinges. This guide shows how to find the right template for TA2714, T4A3786, MacPro and other McKinney full mortise hinges, what the drawings show and which older templates we host.

Where to find McKinney hinge templates

The official templates are in the McKinney resource library (Templates). According to the McKinney Full Line Catalog (51510, 8/26), the templates "list the overall hinge size, material gauge and exact screw hole location" and "should be consulted prior to any door or frame preparation".

How to find the right McKinney template

• Model pair: the TA2714/TA2314 and T4A3786/T4A3386 drawings each cover a steel model (TA2714, T4A3786) and the stainless or brass model the catalog pairs with it (TA2314, T4A3386).
• Hinge height: the templates in the table below are titled by hinge height. The catalog says that in a two-dimension size the first dimension is always the height and the second is the width when open. The 4-1/2 inch TA2714/TA2314 template, for example, gives values for both the 4 and the 4-1/2 inch width.
• Bearing prefix: the catalog calls TA the oil impregnated bearing (standard on five knuckle bearing hinges up to 5 inch height), TB the ball bearing and TCA the concealed bearing. The library also has drawings titled with these prefixes, for example TB2714/TB2314 and TCA2714/TCA2314.

The 6 inch heavy weight drawing (55338) is titled T4B3786/T4B3386 but lists the T4A3786 and T4A3386 catalog numbers; the catalog's bearing page says all 6 inch hinges or larger are ball bearing as a standard.

What a McKinney hinge template shows

Template 55319 (TA2714/TA2314, 4-1/2 inch) shows:

• "DO NOT SCALE", with dimensions in inches and millimeters in parentheses
• the leaf with its screw hole locations
• an end view of the hinge with the knuckle outside diameter "D" and the minimum "S" distance (swage line)
• a table with the gauge of metal (.134 inch here, .180 inch on the 4-1/2 inch T4A3786/T4A3386 template), the "D" diameter and the S distance for each hinge width
• screw sizes: machine 1/2 x 12-24 F.H., wood 1-1/4 x 12 F.H.
• the round corner option: 1/4, 5/8 or 5/32 inch radius, with 1/4 inch supplied if none is specified
• the statement "McKinney Template Hinges of the Catalog Numbers are made to conform to ANSI/BHMA 156.7."

Electric hinge templates: QC, QC x MM, CC

A selection:

• QC, 2 to 12 wires: 55438 for the 4-1/2 inch TA2714/TA2314; 55440 and 55446 for the 4-1/2 and 5 inch T4A3786/T4A3386.
• QC x MM: 55450 (2 to 8 wires) and 55462 (10 to 12 wires) for the 4-1/2 inch TA2714/TA2314; 55458 (2 to 8) and 55470 (10 to 12) for the 5 inch T4A3786/T4A3386.
• MacPro, titled "CC and QC Hinge (4, 8 and 12 Wires)": MP 278-15 (4-1/2 x 4 and 4-1/2 x 4-1/2) and MP 283-21 (5 x 4-1/2); the catalog lists MacPro CC as CC4 or CC8.
• PoE: MP 279-15 (4-1/2 x 4 and 4-1/2 x 4-1/2) and 284-10 (5 x 4-1/2 and 5 x 5), with catalog numbers such as T4A/T4B 3386xPoE.

These drawings add wire locations, connectors, notes on door and frame preparation and, on the QC x MM drawings, the switch location. Template 55438, for example, notes that a QC10 or QC12 on a wood or solid core door needs a pocket for wires and connectors, and says to consult the factory.

QC, CC, MM and PoE in McKinney documents

• QC (ElectroLynx Quick Connect): QC4, QC8 and QC12 carry 2, 4 and 6 circuits, with 28 gauge wires for 4 amp continuous at 24 volts AC or DC per circuit.
• CC (Concealed Circuit): 4, 8 or 12 wires of 28 gauge contained within the hinge, with 8 inch leads as standard; CC-18 has two 18 gauge wires and the rest 28 gauge.
• MM (Magnetic Monitoring): a magnetic reed concealed switch for low voltage, 48 volt maximum. It can be combined with QC or CC on most full mortise hinges, but the catalog does not recommend QC12 x MM or CC12 x MM for wood or solid core doors.
• PoE (ElectroLynx Power over Ethernet): passes Ethernet data through the opening; available on 4-1/2 and 5 inch TA2314, TA2714, T4A3386 and T4A3786 hinges, with door and frame side harnesses ordered separately.

Older McKinney documents on our site (K-MCK-12HD, MCK-25HD, 3001)

• Template K-MCK-12HD-83-09 (PDF, 2 pages) - the 83 inch K-MCK-12HD full mortise continuous geared aluminum hinge for Kawneer, effective September 10, 2009. Page 1 shows the hole layout over the full length and a section through door and jamb; page 2 refers to Template 606 for the CC and MM options.
• MCK-25HD series cut sheet (PDF) - full mortise edge hung continuous geared hinges of extruded 6063-T6 aluminum, in 79, 83, 85, 95 and 120 inch lengths for 6'8" to 10'0" doors.
• Template 380-05 (PDF) - the 3001 double acting horizontal spring pivot hinge, floor mounted, effective January 22, 2005. McKinney's newer revision, Template 380-16 (March 31, 2016), is stamped DISCONTINUED.
