You are replacing or rekeying a Schlage cylinder on a mortise lock, an exit device or an interchangeable core housing, and the new one has to fit both the lock and the key system already on the doors. Most of what you need is in the Schlage number. The rest depends on the lock, the trim and the door.
How to read a Schlage cylinder number
The how-to-order tables in Schlage's Mechanical Price Book write a mortise cylinder in five parts: catalog number with pin count, finish, cylinder length, keyway and keying. Their example 20-001-6 . 626 . 118 . S123 . KD is a 6-pin 20-001 in finish 626, 1-1/8 inches long, in the S123 keyway, keyed different. Rim and interchangeable core (IC) cylinders are written the same way without the length.
Our product names carry most of these codes in another order: Schlage 30-001 C 118 626 means a 30-001, C keyway, 1-1/8 inches, 626 satin chrome.
Schlage mortise cylinders: 30-001, 20-001 and the cam
The catalog number tells you which lock the cylinder was made for, and with it the cam. A selection from the price book's mortise pages, with the cam named in Schlage's L Series service manual:
| Cylinder | Listed for | Cam |
|---|---|---|
| 30-001 | L Series, rose trim | clover leaf |
| 30-021 | L Series, L and N escutcheons | clover leaf |
| 20-001 | L9060 outside, Von Duprin | straight |
The L Series rows do not cover the L9060 outside, L9081, L9485 or L9486, which are listed separately, and the 20-001 also serves other straight cam applications. For modular conventional cylinders the cam part also follows the length: L Series cam L583-474 for 1-1/8, 1-3/8 and 1-5/8 inch cylinders, L583-475 for 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 1-3/4 inch, and straight cams L583-476 and L583-477 split the same way. Our product names call the L Series cam an L cam, and 20-001 C 114 626 stands for a straight cam cylinder, 1-1/4 inches long.
Cylinder length: 118, 114, 138 and the door
The price book lists conventional mortise cylinders in six standard lengths, 1-1/8 to 1-3/4 inches, written as 118, 114, 138, 112, 158 and 134. Longer ones, up to 5 inches, are special cylinders. The chart in the L Series service manual sets the length by function, trim and door thickness. For all functions except those it lists separately, rose trim takes the 30-001 at 118 on doors 1-3/8, 1-3/4, 2 and 2-1/4 inches thick. Escutcheon trim takes the 30-021, and the length grows with the door: 118, 114, 138 and 112.
Some functions, such as the L9060 outside, L9081 and L9496, have rows of their own. Blocking or compression rings may be required and are ordered separately.
Schlage rim cylinders: 20-022 and 20-021
Schlage's standard rim cylinder is the 20-022 with a horizontal tailpiece or the 20-021 with a vertical one, such as a 20-022 C 606 or a 20-021 S123 626. According to the price book, the tailpiece orientation can be changed in the field and should be horizontal for Von Duprin, Monarch and most other applications. For doors over 3 inches thick it lists special rim cylinders and asks you to count the device or trim thickness along with the door.
Interchangeable core housings: FSIC and SFIC
The price book's how-to-order lines give full size (FSIC) mortise cylinders one standard length, 1-1/2 inches, and small format (SFIC) ones 1-3/8 inches. Blocking ring tables then list the ring size, or none, by L Series function, trim and door thickness. A selection of housings sold without the core (the L Series rows again leave out the functions listed separately):
| Lock or device | FSIC | SFIC |
|---|---|---|
| L Series, escutcheon | 30-007 | 80-108 |
| L Series, rose trim | 30-137 | 80-101 |
| Von Duprin, straight cam | 26-064 | 80-102 |
| Rim | 20-079 | 80-129 |
The rose trim housings include a blocking ring, 3/8 inch on the 30-137 and 1/4 inch on the 80-101, and the 80-102 has a 1/4 inch ring too. IC mortise cylinders take cam L583-255 in these L Series housings and the K510-730 straight cam for Von Duprin and other straight cam applications. The standard Schlage full size core is the 23-030, such as the 23-030 C 626; core formats are compared in our SFIC vs LFIC guide.
Schlage construction cores and the 48-101 ICC key
Schlage's full size construction core, 23-030-ICX, has a 6-pin C keyway and an orange face, and the back of each core carries the letter of its keyed alike group: A, B or C. It comes with no keys. The cut construction key 48-101 and the cut control key 48-056 are ordered separately, with ICX for a new job and ICA, ICB or ICC for cores already on site. So the 48-101 ICC key and the 48-056 ICC control key go with group C cores.
A full size IC mortise or rim cylinder for a new job is ordered with a construction core by adding ICX to a non-Primus number, as in the 20-057-ICX 626 rim cylinder. The price book notes that construction cores are keyed alike to one of a limited number of combinations nationwide, so another Schlage project nearby may share the key. Small format construction cores use the BEST A keyway and a green or brown face.
Keyway, keying and finish
The keyway must match your key system. The price book lists the Classic keyways, such as C and E, with no restriction and Everest C and Everest 29 S as open, while Everest D, Everest 29 T, Everest B and Everest 29 R are restricted. S123 in Schlage's example belongs to the open Everest 29 S family, and the C in 30-001 C 118 626 is a Classic keyway. Key blanks are covered in our key blank guide.
The finish is a BHMA number such as 626 satin chrome or 606 satin brass (see our finish codes chart). Not every part follows it: the price book gives a conventional mortise cylinder ordered in 605 bright brass a 606 plug, and FSIC and SFIC mortise cylinders sold separately are not offered in 629, 630 or 630AM.
