Replacing a Schlage L9000 Mortise Lock Body: Function, Hand and Trim

The latch sticks or the case inside the door has cracked, yet the levers still look fine. With a Schlage L9000 mortise lock you can order the lock body alone, or only the trim, once you know the function, the hand and the small parts that go with it.

How to tell which L9000 function is in the door

Schlage's replacement parts page says model numbers are not printed on the lock components, and that requests to Schlage go faster with photos of the inside, outside and edge of the door. Take those photos before you remove anything.

The price book's armor front table names each armor by the bolts on the door edge, but lists only some of the functions:

  • Latch only (09-662): L9010, L9040
  • Latch and auxiliary latch (09-663): L9050, L9056, L9070, L9080, L9081, L9082, and electrified L9090 to L9093 and L9095 without a door position sensor
  • Latch and deadbolt (09-664): L9456, L9465, L9473
  • Latch, auxiliary latch and deadbolt (09-666): L9453, L9480, L9485, L9492 to L9495

Then compare the trim and how each lever behaves with our lock functions guide and Schlage model numbers guide.

L9000 function numbers and lock body part numbers

The price book lists lock cases sold on their own, most under L283 numbers, and several functions share one case. A selection:

The service manual also shows L9050, L9060, L9070 and L9071 on one page with case L283-133. Our lock body titles use the same groups: L9050LB covers L9050, L9060, L9070 and L9071; L9080LB covers L9026 and L9080; L9480LB covers L9480, L9485 and L9486.

What LB, B and RH 134 mean on a lock body

In the price book, B marks a lock case from Schlage's component program, where case, trim, armor front, strike and cylinder are ordered separately. L means less full face cylinder, so L9050LB is an entrance or office case without a cylinder. Among the mechanical cases, the two non-keyed ones carry only the B: L9010B passage and L9040B privacy.

Neither form is a complete lock: program cases come with mounting screws and templates only, L283 cases with nothing else. In our lock body titles, RH 134 after L9056LB or L9453LB means right hand, 1-3/4 inch door.

Lock hand: L9000 cases ship right hand

The price book says all lock cases ship right hand. If your door needs a different hand, page 197 of the service manual describes the change for any L Series lock: with the case out of the door, the latchbolt is pulled out and turned 180 degrees, and the handing screw moves to the other side of the chassis. That screw always belongs on the interior side of the door.

Schlage's lever and rose instructions show what a wrong setting looks like: the outside lever is always free while the inside lever locks and unlocks. It points to the handing screw. Hand names are in our door handing chart.

Which trim fits: 09-454, 09-455 and 09-456 trim sets

In the component program, trim comes as packs of outside and inside trim, each pack number covering a group of functions. A pack includes mounting screws, mounting plates, spring cages, L mounting posts and strike boxes, and its components are for 1-3/4 inch doors only. A selection:

L909009-45409-446
L909209-45409-449

The item number adds lever, rose or escutcheon letter, finish and, where needed, hand; the price book's example is 09-446.M61.L.626.RH. Our product titles drop the dots and dashes, so 0945407A626 is pack 09-454 with the 07 lever, rose A and finish 626, and 09456LATA626 is the 09-456 pack with the Latitude lever. Some lever designs, such as 12, Accent, Asti and Merano, require the hand to be specified; a 12 lever pack for a left hand door, for example, is 0945412A626LH.

For L9071, missing from these packs, the price book offers a trim kit ordered as the lock less lock case (LLC): both trims with spring cages, spindles, screws and thru-bolts, but no cylinder, armor front or strike.

Armor front, strike and spindles

  • Armor front: 1-1/4 x 8 inches, chosen by the bolt layout above; 09-663, for example, is the latch and auxiliary latch version.
  • Strike: the standard L9000 strike is 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. The price book gives 10-072 as the default for functions such as L9050, L9080 and L9453; 09-494-1316 is a pack of ten 10-072 strikes with that lip.
  • Spindles: for separately sold lock cases, the price book warns that the correct spindle must be used. Two L283-060 suit 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors; L0172, L9091, L9093, L9095, L9493 and L9495 take one L283-064.

Electrified lock bodies for L9090 and L9092

The price book lists L9090LB for L9090 and L9092 and L9091LB for L9091, L9093 and L9095. EL or EU is specified with the order; without it the case ships EU. Each option set has its own case number in the service manual; our L9090LB-RX lock body title names L283-392, the version with request to exit.

On L9090 and L9092 the electric function works on the outside lever only; the inside lever stays free. L9091, L9093 and L9095 act on both levers, and Schlage's electrified lock instructions warn that locking both levers prevents normal egress from the inside.

A switch on the chassis selects EL or EU; after a change the instructions require one complete lock and unlock power cycle. The same instructions say an RX module (L283-452) comes off before the hand is changed and goes back with its microswitch on the handing screw side. Our electrified hardware guide explains EL, EU and RX.
