When every door in a house gets new Schlage hardware, the same two questions come up at each opening: what does this door have to do, and will its lever or knob match the others? The bathroom needs a lock, the linen closet only a latch, the front door a key. Schlage offers its F Series lever and knob designs in several functions, and the item number shows which pieces belong to one set.
Schlage passage, privacy or keyed entry: which function for which door
Besides electronic options, the Latitude and Accent spec sheets list five functions, F80 Storeroom among them. The other four cover the doors in this guide:
| Door | Function; how it works |
|---|---|
| Front, side door | F51A keyed entry; Key outside, turn button inside |
| Bedroom, bathroom | F40 privacy; Push button inside, emergency pin key |
| Hall, closet | F10 passage; Does not lock |
| Inactive door of a pair | F170 non-turning; Fixed, one side, no latch |
Front and side doors
Schlage describes the keyed entry lock for entry and side doors, or anywhere keyed security is needed. Outside, the key locks and unlocks it. Inside, a turn-button locks it, and turning the inside knob or lever unlocks it for a quick exit.
The other route is a passage set paired with a deadbolt, which Schlage's F10 pages mention for exterior doors. Schlage offers decorative trims on its B Series deadbolts too, Collins among them; B60COL622, for example, is the single cylinder Collins deadbolt in Matte Black. Our deadbolt guide compares single and double cylinder types.
Bedrooms and bathrooms
The F40 Bed and Bath lock is Schlage's privacy function for bedroom and bathroom doors where locking may be desired. A push button locks it from inside. Turning the inside knob or lever releases the button, and the included pin key opens it from outside in an emergency. Our lock functions guide compares privacy with the other functions.
Closets, halls and the pantry
The F10 Hall and Closet lock never locks. Schlage describes it for interior hall and closet doors where locking is not needed. Schlage's F10 pages do not name pantries, but a pantry door that only has to latch fits the same description.
Double closet doors
Schlage's F170 page names two common uses for the non-turning lever or knob: a door pull, and the inactive door in a double door installation. It mounts on the surface of one side, with no latch and no bore holes. It comes one per box, so count every door face that needs one. Handing depends on the design. Schlage's Latitude F170 page lists universal handing, but the Accent F170 is handed: for a pair of doors, Schlage says to order one right hand and one left hand, and the RH in F170ACC622RH marks the right hand one. Our product names call it a half dummy, as in the F170LAT622COL.
Keep the set matched: lever, trim and finish in the item number
On Schlage's knob and lever pages, the number after the function gives the lever or knob, the finish and, when the lock has a decorative trim, the trim; our Schlage model numbers guide explains each part. In a matched house the function changes from door to door and the rest stays put. A Latitude set with Collins trim in Matte Black:
| Door | Item number |
|---|---|
| Front door | F51ALAT622COL |
| Bedroom, bathroom | F40LAT622COL |
| Hall, closet | F10LAT622COL |
| Inactive door | F170LAT622COL |
Lever designs include Latitude (LAT), Accent (ACC) and Broadway (BRW). Plymouth (PLY) and Georgian (GEO) are knobs. Collins (COL) and Century (CEN) are two of the ten decorative trims on the Latitude sheet, and a lock with standard trim carries no trim code, as in Schlage's F10 BRW 619 Broadway lever. Our knob and lever names say rose where Schlage says trim: the F10LAT622COL is named the Latitude lever passage lock with Collins rose.
Finish codes and what is actually offered
The finish is the three-digit code, such as 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Matte Black or 716 Aged Bronze. Not every design comes in every finish. The Latitude sheet lists seven finishes and the Accent sheet ten, with Bright Brass, Antique Brass and Distressed Nickel on the Accent sheet but not the Latitude one, and both sheets point to the latest price book for available trims and finishes. So choose the design and finish together, then check that every function you need exists in that combination. On a schlage.com knob or lever page, the Function Options box lists the other functions in the same trim. For BHMA finish numbers, see our finish codes chart.
Handing
The Latitude and Accent sheets list field reversible levers on the privacy, passage and keyed functions; for the F170, see double closet doors above. Schlage marks some handleset designs as handed, and F59 Accent trims come in left and right hand versions, such as F59ACC622LH. Our door handing chart shows how to tell LH from RH.
Front door handlesets: F60, F62 and the F58 with F59
Schlage describes the F60 single cylinder handleset as a decorative deadbolt, a matching exterior grip and an interior passage knob or lever. In its number for the Century handleset with a Latitude lever in Satin Nickel, F60 CEN 619 LAT, the interior lever code follows the finish. The Matte Black version, F60CEN622LAT, shares the Latitude lever and the 622 finish with the set above.
Schlage's handleset instructions also cover the F62, with a cylinder inside instead of a thumbturn (read the double cylinder caution in our deadbolt guide), and the F93 dummy. They give a different door thickness range than the F60 product page, and our door prep guide compares the two.
A single cylinder handleset also comes as two halves. In our product descriptions, the F58 exterior active handleset, for example F58CEN622, is the outside grip and deadbolt trim of the F60, ordered with an F59. The F59, for example F59LAT622 (Latitude) or F59BRW622 (Broadway), is the inside half, ordered with an F58. Schlage's handleset instructions do not cover these two pieces, so send us both item numbers before you order a pair.
