Hafele Flap Fittings, Flap Stays and Lid Stays: Sizing and Installation Instructions

Ordering a Hafele lift-up or swing-up fitting such as Free Space, Free Up or Free Fold means picking one of several models from tables of height and door weight. Some parts are ordered separately. Below are the fitting types, the sizing tables, the set contents and what three Hafele installation instructions cover.

Hafele flap fittings and stays: the types in the catalog

• Swing-up fittings: Hafele's product name on hafele.com for Free Space 1.11, 6.15 and 1.8, Free Flap 1.7 and 3.15, Free Flap H 1.5, Maxi and Duo Forte. Free Space 1.11 needs no additional hinges or cover caps (page 10.7); Free Flap H 1.5 and Maxi are used together with concealed hinges (pages 10.14 and 10.21).
• Parallel lift-up front fitting: Free Up, for one-piece doors; the catalog notes it may not suit cabinets that sit on the countertop, such as appliance garages (page 10.33).
• Front lift-up fitting: Free Swing, for one-piece wood, glass or aluminum framed doors and large front panels (page 10.36).
• Double door lift-up fittings: Free Fold and Free Fold Short, for two-piece doors of equal size (pages 10.39 and 10.41).
• Lid and flap stays: the Duo can be used as either; adjusting the arms turns the lid stay into a flap stay (page 10.45). Its drawings show a lid stay on a front opening upward and a flap stay on one opening downward. Miniwinch, Microwinch and Salice Pacta are listed as flap stays (pages 10.61-10.66).
• Chest stays: the Maxi chest stay opens to a maximum of 75 degrees and needs concealed hinges and plates; piano or other hinges are not recommended (page 10.68).
• Lid stay 371.32.700 (right hand) and 371.32.755 (left hand): a steel stay the catalog lists for use as a door restraint (page 10.55).

How Hafele sizes flap fittings: height, door weight and power factor

For Free Space, the catalog says the model depends on door height and then door weight including the pull, and recommends the stronger fitting if in doubt (page 10.8). Each line has its own table:

• Free Space 1.11: models B to F for door heights of 225-650 mm (9-26 inch). At 400 mm (16 inch), model B covers 2.6-5.3 lb and model F 16.7-23.5 lb (page 10.8). Free Space 1.8 has models B to E, Free Space 6.15 models G and H (pages 10.9-10.10).
• Free Up: four height ranges between 320 and 600 mm, each with its own models, for example P1us to P3us for 345-420 mm (page 10.33). Free Swing: models S4sw to S9sw for door heights of 370-800 mm (page 10.36).
• Free Fold: combined door height (580-1040 mm) and combined door weight, models E1fo to L6fo (page 10.39).
• Maxi and Free Flap H 1.5 for power-assisted opening: tables by door height and opening angle; on those pages the weights apply to one fitting and double with two fittings (pages 10.15 and 10.24).
• Duo Standard: maximum door weight by door height, opening angle and stopping or braking function, for one or two stays; always two fittings when used as a flap stay (page 10.46).
• Miniwinch: tables by flap height, flap weight, hinge type and horizontal or vertical installation; the number in the table is how many Miniwinches are required (pages 10.62-10.63).

The Free Space 1.11 installation instructions add a power factor: PF = KH x weight, with KH the cabinet height in mm and the weight in kg (not pounds) of the front with its handles. Hafele.com lists the same ranges as efficiency factor (EF).

What comes in the set and what to order separately

• Free Space: 2 fittings (right and left), 2 brackets with screws, mounting instructions and a paper drilling template; Free Space 1.8 adds a push catch. For aluminum framed doors (frame width at least 45 mm), Free Space 1.11 and 1.8 take screws and collars set 372.27.600; Free Space 6.15 is not for aluminum framed doors (pages 10.8-10.12).
• Free Up and Free Swing: 2 fittings, front mounting material, installation instructions, paper drilling template and 2 cover caps. The cross bar is ordered separately (mandatory for Free Up, to synchronize the left and right fittings). Cross bars are listed for 600, 900, 1200 and 1800 mm outside cabinet widths and can be cut to the internal cabinet width minus 88 mm (pages 10.33, 10.36 and 10.38).
• Free Fold and Free Fold Short: the same contents. Concealed hinges for the door are sold separately, and the catalog asks for 110 degree free swinging hinges (pages 10.39 and 10.41). The connecting hinge between the panels (372.93.100) is a separate accessory (page 10.43).
• Maxi chest stay: mounting brackets, the recommended soft closing mechanism, concealed hinges and plates are ordered separately (page 10.68).

Hafele installation instructions: what each document covers

These instructions are mostly drawings; the document number and date (day.month.year) are printed in the margin. Follow the document packed with your fitting.

Free Space 1.11: document 732.23.205 (dated 19.03.2024, 12 pages)

• Page 1: parts and aluminum frame accessories
• Page 2: model letter on the fitting, item numbers by model and color, installation dimensions
• Page 3: power factor table
• Pages 4-5: drilling the front and fitting the front brackets
• Pages 6-8: drilling the cabinet sides with the template, mounting the fittings, attaching the front
• Pages 9-11: opening angle (107 or 90 degrees), spring force and front adjustment, removing the front
• Page 12: 1:1 drilling template, left and right

Free Up (732.23.015, dated 06/2014, 8 pages) and Free Fold (732.23.016, dated 22.11.2017, 12 pages)

Both follow the same order: parts and accessories on page 1, the model table on page 2 (in Free Up with the cross bar lengths), planning dimensions on page 3, then mounting and adjustment drawings. Both predate the 2026 catalog and list models it does not, such as Free Up O3us and P4us.
