Picking a Schlage keypad lock for a rental unit or your own front door comes down to three questions: deadbolt or lever, whether the door should relock by itself, and how you get in when the battery is dead.
Schlage keypad locks compared: BE365, BE375, FE575, FE595, FE695
Of the five keypad and Touch models, two are deadbolts and three are levers. The last two rows are Schlage Control, a separate line for multifamily doors.
| Model | Schlage name; opens from outside with |
|---|---|
| BE365 | Keypad Deadbolt; Code, key override |
| BE375 | Schlage Touch deadbolt; Code |
| FE575 | Keypad Lever, Auto Lock; Code, key override |
| FE595 | Keypad Lever, Flex Lock; Code, key override |
| FE695 | Schlage Touch lever; Code |
| BE467F | Schlage Control deadbolt; Credential or phone |
| FE410F | Schlage Control interconnected; Credential or phone |
The BE365, FE575 and FE595 have a 5-pin C keyway cylinder and come with one key, which the user guide reserves for emergencies. Schlage describes the two Schlage Touch models as cylinder-free, with no keyway to bump or pick.
Auto lock, flex lock or manual locking
- BE365: press the Schlage button and turn the outside thumbturn to lock it from outside. The guide calls this Lock and Leave, on by default. With it off, a user code is needed before the thumbturn locks the door, which the guide says keeps an unauthorized person from locking the door from outside.
- FE575 Auto Lock: always locked from outside. Schlage's product page says it relocks 5 seconds after the code is entered, and the user guide says the inside lever retracts the latch at any time.
- FE595 Flex Lock: normally locked from outside. Turn the inside thumbturn to vertical and the lock stays unlocked, with no code needed, until you turn it back to horizontal.
- FE695: the product page lists auto-lock and unlock modes to choose from, and the inside lever stays unlocked for exit.
- BE375: the product page describes no locking modes; check the Schlage Touch Digital User Guide on Schlage's programming guides page.
Codes, batteries and the override key
Schlage's pages give all five keypad and Touch models two pre-set 4-digit codes and storage for up to 19.
| Models | Battery | If it goes dead |
|---|---|---|
| BE365, FE575, FE595 | One 9V | Key override |
| BE375, FE695 | One 9V | Jumpstart feature |
| BE467F, FE410F | Four AA | 9V jump start |
For the BE365, FE575 and FE595, the user guide asks for a high-quality alkaline 9 volt battery and advises against lithium, which may last longer but fails quickly. The Schlage button turns red when the battery is low and blinks red when it is critically low. On the BE365 and FE595 the battery is behind the inside cover; the FE575 has to come off the door. On the FE575 and FE595 the override key turns 270 degrees and cannot be removed while the lock is unlocked.
Codes on a rental door
From the BE365, FE575 and FE595 user guide:
- The 6-digit programming code puts the lock into programming mode. It does not unlock the door.
- Delete All User Codes removes every user code from the lock.
- Vacation Mode stops all user codes from unlocking the door until you turn it off.
- Two stickers carry the default programming and user codes: one on the back of the keypad, visible only with the keypad off the door, and one on the user guide. Schlage says customer service cannot retrieve lost default codes and warns against restoring factory settings without them.
Schlage Control: BE467F deadbolt and FE410F interconnected lock
Schlage designed Control for multifamily resident doors: residents open it with a smart credential or a smartphone. Its credential list names Schlage MIFARE Classic and MIFARE DESFire EV1 and EV2 smart credentials plus Bluetooth and NFC mobile credentials, and mobile use depends on a compatible mobile credential. Keypad codes are not on that list.
Control comes as the BE467F deadbolt or as the FE410F interconnected lock, which Schlage describes as single-motion egress. Both are programmed at the door with the ENGAGE mobile app over Bluetooth. Schlage lists offline, No-Tour and real-time use. No-Tour lets a manager assign and change access rights without visiting the lock, and real time needs an ENGAGE Gateway. Properties can also manage the locks through the access control (PACS) or Proptech provider of their choice; Schlage notes that features vary by system. Each lock stores up to 500 users and 1,000 audit events, depending on the software.
Schlage gives the four AA batteries up to 1-1/2 years in offline mode and up to 1 year with Bluetooth credentials enabled, offers low battery notifications, and says a 9V battery can jump start the lock to let in a user with an assigned credential.
Door prep for Schlage keypad and Control locks
- BE365, BE375, FE575, FE595, FE695: Schlage's pages list doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick with a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. A BE375 thick door kit extends the range to 1-7/8 to 2-1/2 inches.
- BE467F and FE410F: 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, with thick door kits up to 2-1/4 inches for the deadbolt and up to 2 inches for the interconnected lock. The adjustable backset fits 2-3/8 to 2-3/4 inches. Schlage gives a minimum stile of 4-1/2 inches for the 2-3/8 backset and 5 inches for the 2-3/4 backset. The FE410F has 4 inch and 5.5 inch center-to-center door prep options.
Schlage publishes BE365 door prep instructions and BE467 and FE410 door templates for doors with and without existing holes. Bore and backset basics are in our Schlage and Emtek door prep chart.
Reading the number on a Schlage keypad lock
On Schlage's FE595 page, the satin nickel lock with Camelot trim and Accent lever is listed as FE595 CAM 619 ACC: model, trim, finish and lever. The BE365 page stops after the finish, as in BE365 CAM 619. In our product names the same code can appear without spaces, for example BE365CAM619 or FE575CAM619ACC. Trim and lever codes are explained in our guide to Schlage lock numbers, and finish numbers such as 619 in our finish code chart.

Page 5 of the Keypad Locks User Guide, linked from Schlage's keypad FAQ page, shows the FE575 and FE595 parts: Schlage button, keypad, cylinder, latch, outside and inside levers, and an inside thumbturn on the FE595 only. Our Schlage lock parts guide covers FE595 parts and part numbers.
