You have picked a matte black lever, and now the hinges, the closer and the exit device have to follow, each from a different maker. The makers print their own black codes, and the word black can mean powder coat, paint or anodized aluminum.
What is 622 finish?
622 is the BHMA number for flat or matte black, and in the Hager and Ives tables it is the number for that black on a brass base. Hager's 2024 finish table calls it flat black coated, the Ives finish guide calls it matte black on brass or bronze, and both print the older US19 beside it. Our finish codes chart shows where it sits among the other BHMA numbers.
In the Hager and Ives tables, the base metal changes the number. Hager lists the same US19 flat black as 622 on brass, 631 on steel, 676 on zinc and 711 on aluminum. Ives gives matte black as 622 on brass or bronze, 631 on steel and 676 on zinc, and lists its SPBLK matte black as 622 for all base materials. Our Ives 5BB1HW and 5BB1 hinge pages show the difference: the brass base B-BLK hinge is listed as 622/US19, the steel base F-BLK hinge as 631/US19.
Black finish codes by brand
Each row below comes from that maker's own documents: a current price book or catalog, a finish page or, for Emtek, its FAQ. Only the black finishes are listed, and not every finish is offered on every product. Von Duprin, for one, sends readers to each device's own finish page.

Matte, flat, gloss, satin and black suede
Matte, flat and gloss are each maker's own words. Where a table also says how the black is made, three methods appear:
- Powder coat. Von Duprin describes 622 as powder-coated matte black. LCN lists 622 Matte Black and 693 Gloss Black among the standard powder coated finishes for its closers. Sargent's BSP is a black suede powder coat, and Emtek says the Flat Black on its wrought steel hardware is a powder coat finish.
- Paint. Von Duprin's 693 is black paint, gloss rather than flat powder, while Hager lists 693 as flat black paint. Deltana calls both US19 (622) and US1B (601) Paint Black, and Falcon's exit device finish page calls 622 flat black painted.
- Anodized aluminum. Ives and ABH list 711 as black anodized aluminum, and Falcon's exit device page has 711 as anodized aluminum, flat black. The same number is not always anodized: Hager's 711 is flat black coated on aluminum, and Von Duprin's 98/99 finish table shows its 711 black as powder coat.
Satin is Baldwin's word. Its black finish is 190 Satin Black, its two-finish codes M01 to M08 each pair Satin Black with a second finish, and its Estate price book pairs 190 with US 19 and BHMA 622, as our Baldwin guide shows.
Some codes carry no BHMA number. Kwikset's price book prints dashes in that column for 514 Matte Black, and Sargent's 10X Line table repeats BSP there. ABH's two documents differ. Its August 2026 price list gives S4 black powder coat as 622/693, while its 2026 Essentials catalog lists S4/BSP as 693, Black Suede Powder Coat.
Ordering a black lever, hinges, closer and exit device
Order each piece by the code its maker prints, not by the word black or by 622 alone:
- Lever or knob: Schlage 622, Falcon 622, Sargent BSP on the 10X Line, Baldwin 190, Emtek US19 on brass or FB on bronze, Kwikset 514.
- Hinges: in the Ives and Hager tables, matte or flat black on a steel base is 631 and on a brass base 622.
- Closer: LCN 622 for matte black, 693 for gloss black.
- Exit device: Von Duprin's 98/99 series overview lists 622, 693 and 711, and Falcon's exit device page lists 622 and 711. Falcon notes on that page that the base material varies by device component and that the code represents the overall finish appearance of the assembled device.
Will black finishes from different makers match?
None of these tables promises that one maker's black matches another's, and we cannot promise it either. Even within one brand, Emtek's FAQ says its Flat Black (US19) on brass and Flat Black Bronze (FB) on bronze look similar, yet the metal underneath leaves slight but noticeable differences.
So read three things for every item: the maker's code, its own description of the finish and the base metal. Brand codes in more depth: Emtek, Kwikset, Baldwin and Deltana. To shop by type, start from door hinges and pivots, door closers and operators or exit devices and panic hardware.
