NGP Door Sweeps by Seal: Vinyl, Neoprene and Nylon Brush Profiles, Dimensions and Materials

A commercial door needs a new sweep and there is no old number to copy. In the National Guard Products (NGP) line, that leaves three things to settle: the seal, the profile, then the finish and length. The figures below come from NGP's catalog and product pages, so you can set the 97V, 200N, 199N, 600 and 601 side by side before you order.

NGP door sweeps by seal: what the drawings measure

NGP's current Gasketing & Automatic Door Bottoms catalog (NGP-CAT-GAS-1026-A, on its Catalogs page) sorts sweeps by seal on pages G43 to G45, and page G46 adds nylon brush seals with an EPDM rubber insert. The drawings print two upright figures for each profile, and NGP does not name them. Read against the drawing, the upper figure runs along the metal retainer and the lower one along the seal below it. This table is a selection, not the full list:

NumberSealUpper and lower, in.
97VVinyl7/8 and 7/8
101VVinyl1-1/2 and 1/2
200NNeoprene1-1/4 and 1/2
199NNeoprene1-1/4 and 1-3/16
197NNeoprene7/8 and 1-9/16
200SSilicone1-1/4 and 1/2
600Nylon brush7/8 and 1/2
601Nylon brush7/8 and 1
C627Nylon brush1-7/16 and 9/16
H612Nylon brush1-3/8 and 2-1/2
C697Brush, EPDM insert3/4 and 3/4
D698Brush, EPDM insert1-1/16 and 1

The 600 and 601 share a 7/8 inch upper figure, then part ways at the brush: 1/2 inch against 1 inch. The 200N and 199N follow the same pattern, with 1/2 inch or 1-3/16 inches of neoprene below the same 1-1/4 inch figure. These pages do not say which profile suits which gap under a door.

The neoprene, vinyl, nylon brush and EPDM insert sections print #6 x 3/4 inch stainless steel screws as furnished, with slotted screw holes. The 202N and 203N are marked #6 x 1 inch.

What NGP prints about vinyl, neoprene and nylon brush

Pages G43 to G45 say little about the material beyond seal color. Page G5 points readers to the perimeter seal pages for the properties of many gasket materials, and NGP's own product pages for the 97V, 200NA, 199NA, 600 and 601 list the same lines for those sweeps:

  • Vinyl (97V; also page G18). Thermo-Plastic Vulcanizate, described as economical and moisture-resistant, with a temperature range of -40F to 250F.
  • Neoprene (200NA, 199NA; also page G20, Neoprene Bulb Seals). Synthetic EPDM rubber in a polypropylene thermoplastic matrix, moisture-resistant, with very good abrasion resistance, tensile strength and memory, good resistance to ozone, sunlight and aging, and a temperature range of -81F to 275F.
  • Nylon brush (600, 601; also page G23). Polyamide, moisture-resistant, with excellent abrasion resistance, flexibility and memory and a temperature range of -70F to 425F. NGP adds that it retains insecticides well, and prints one more line: "Not Effective Against Water Penetration".

Since NGP describes its vinyl as a vulcanizate and its neoprene in EPDM terms, compare the two by these printed lines rather than by the generic names. Silicone seals have their own lines on page G22, including a range of -81F to 300F.

Moisture resistance and water penetration are separate lines, and the 600 and 601 carry both. The EPDM insert section reads differently. For the C697, D698 and C699, page G46 prints "EPDM Rubber Insert Protects Against Water Penetration and Provides an Effective Bottom Seal for Exterior Doors", with a range of -60F to 300F. That sentence belongs to those models alone, and NGP's lines for the 97V and 200NA do not repeat it.

Rating symbols appear on pages G43 to G45, and page G46 prints none. Some carry exceptions, such as *except 203N on page G43. The legend is on page G4. We leave ratings out here, so read them for your exact number on the catalog page.

NGP door sweep finishes and lengths

The letters at the end of the number give the finish: A for anodized aluminum, B for black anodized, DKB for dark bronze and none for mill aluminum. Not every number takes all four, as these catalog listings show:

ProfilePrinted versions
97V97V, 97VA, 97VB, 97VDKB
200N200NA, 200NB, 200NDKB
199N199NA, 199NB, 199NDKB
600600, 600A, 600B, 600DKB
601601, 601A, 601B, 601DKB

The catalog prints neoprene and vinyl as black. On the nylon brush sweeps of page G45 the finish sets the brush color, gray with mill or A and black with B or DKB. The catalog also lists -BB versions with black brush, such as 600-BB and 600A-BB. Our NGP number guide explains how these letters fit into a full NGP number.

Pages G43 to G46 print no list of lengths. NGP's Door Sweeps sheet (PDF) opens with "Cut sweep to fit." and closes by adjusting the position so the "sweep does not impede proper closing and latching of door". Follow that sheet for the steps between. Our titles give the length after the number, as in NGP 200NA 36" and NGP 200NA 48".
