A spec calls for a 7547, the door down the hall has a 7827 on it, and the order still needs a trim, a size and a hand. The model number answers most of it. Von Duprin's 70 Series page presents "the new Von Duprin 70 Series exit devices"; the charts below come from the maker's 78 and 75 Series catalog and price book.
Von Duprin 75 or 78: narrow stile or wide stile
In the catalog's ordering key, 75 is the narrow stile series and 78 the wide stile series. The center cases differ: the catalog gives 9 x 1-5/8 x 2-3/8 inches on the 75 and 7-7/8 x 2-3/4 x 2-3/8 inches on the 78. Pushbar length, projection and the 5/8 inch deadlocking latch bolt are listed the same for both.
The catalog's Stile Information table (page 53) lists a stile figure by device, strike and application, such as 2 inches for a 75 rim device with the 1439, its standard single door strike, and 4-1/2 inches for a 78 rim device with the 299 strike and 785 or 780 trim.
Rim, SVR or CVR: reading the four digits
The first two digits name the series. Two more digits name the device type: 27 for a surface vertical rod (SVR) device, 47 for a concealed vertical rod (CVR) device. A bare 75 or 78 is a rim device (see our guide to exit device types).
| Number | Stile | Device type |
|---|---|---|
| 75 | Narrow | Rim |
| 7527 | Narrow | Surface vertical rod |
| 7547 | Narrow | Concealed vertical rod |
| 78 | Wide | Rim |
| 7827 | Wide | Surface vertical rod |
| 7847 | Wide | Concealed vertical rod |
| 7847WDC | Wide | Concealed vertical rod, wood door |
An F after the function marks fire exit hardware, as in 7847EO-F. LBR (less bottom rod) is offered on the 7527, 7547, 7827 and 7847; for fire devices the catalog says LBR devices must be ordered in pairs or used with an approved automatic or constant latching flush bolt. Letters in front of the number are options, such as CD cylinder dogging (panic only), QEL quiet electric latch retraction and RX request to exit.
A 9875 or 9975 is not a 75 Series device
In the 98/99 section of the price book, 75 is the device type code for a mortise lock device, written after 98 or 99. In the 70 Series, 75 is the series itself, and the price book lists only rim, 27 and 47 devices for it. Their documents are in our post on Von Duprin 98/99 installation instructions.
Trim functions: EO, DT, NL, L and the trim for each series
The letters after the device number set the outside function. Both series offer EO, DT, NL, NL-OP, L, L-BE, L-DT, TL and TL-BE. The 78 adds L-NL; for the 75 the price book notes that the 360L L function is field-convertible to L-NL. Standard trim by series, from the price book:
| Function | 75 trim | 78 trim |
|---|---|---|
| EO, exit only | None | None |
| DT, dummy trim | 386DT | 785DT |
| NL, night latch | 386NL | 785NL |
| NL-OP, night latch, optional pull | 388 | 110MD or 110WD |
| L, keyed lever | 360L | 780L |
| L-BE, lever, no cylinder | 360L-BE | 780L-BE |
| L-DT, dummy lever | 360L-DT | 780L-DT |
| L-NL, lever night latch | Not listed | 780L-NL |
| TL, turn lever | 386DT with 374T or 376T | 785DT with 374T or 376T |
TL and TL-BE are listed for vertical rod devices only, with the 374T thumbturn control on surface rod devices and the 376T on concealed rod devices (376WDC-T on the 7847WDC). DT and L-DT work as a pull when the device is dogged, and the catalog marks both as not recommended for a fire device. The price book lists the 386NL as handed and not field reversible, so it is ordered RHR or LHR (see our door handing chart).
On a 98 or 99 device the price book lists 990 and 996 trims as standard; our post on Von Duprin exit device trim covers them.
3 ft or 4 ft, and sizing on site
Every 70 Series device type comes in a 3 ft or a 4 ft length, but two Von Duprin documents print different door ranges for them:
- Catalog (Rev. 05/26): 3 ft device for a 2 ft 6 in to 3 ft door, 4 ft device for a 3 ft to 4 ft door.
- Price book (Rev. 10/26): 3 ft device for a 2 ft 4 in to 3 ft door, 4 ft device for a 2 ft 10 in to 4 ft door.
Where the ranges disagree for your door, ask Von Duprin or call us before ordering. Von Duprin's 70 Series page describes both lengths as field sizeable for single and double door applications; for the sizing steps, work from the instructions and template for your device. On our product pages, in numbers such as 7527EO-626-36 or 7547L-626-36-RHR-06, 36 is the size in inches and 626 is satin chrome (see our finish codes chart).
How the 70 Series differs from the 98/99
Von Duprin's 70 Series page describes the 98/99 as a high-performance, wide stile, heavy-duty exit device. The price book shows where the lines part:
- Device types: the 75 and 78 sections list rim, 27 and 47 devices. The 98/99 section also lists 48 concealed rod, 57 three point latch, 75 mortise lock, 49 and 50-WDC concealed vertical cable and 52 pool exit hardware.
- Sizes: the 98/99 also has a 2 ft device for a 2 ft door on vertical devices.
Strikes such as the 299 and 338 appear in the charts of both lines; our Von Duprin strikes guide explains them.
Instructions and templates for the 75 and 78
Von Duprin's Template Indexes by Series (PDF) lists separate 75 and 78 indexes for metal and wood doors:
- 75, metal door: 115936, plus 115937 for trims, controls, cylinders and strikes
- 75, wood door: 115938 and 115994
- 78, metal door: 115996, the 86 index 115995, the 161 index 115997, plus 115998 for trims, controls and strikes
- 78, wood door: 115999 and 116000
The catalog says the 7827 covers stock hollow metal doors with 86 or 161 cutouts, and the 78 rim device does so on single doors (on pairs it may; consult the template). Specifications, trim charts and UL fire listing tables are in the 78 and 75 Series catalog (PDF). For mounting and wiring, follow Von Duprin's instructions for your exact device. The devices and trims we carry are on our Von Duprin page.
