Schlage Indicator Locks: How to Read OS-OCC, OS-LOC, IS-LOC and L583-363 on L9000, ND and B500 Locks

On a restroom door, people in the hallway want to see whether the room is taken. On a classroom security lock, the teacher wants to see from inside that the door is locked. Schlage sets the indicator with a short code at the end of the number, such as OS-OCC or IS-LOC, and the same codes appear in our product names. Here is how the Schlage Mechanical Price Book (Price book 17, Rev. 10/26) uses them on L9000 mortise locks, ND cylindrical locks and B500 and B600 deadbolts; our range is on the Schlage brand page.

OS-OCC, OS-LOC, IS-LOC and IS-OCC: what the letters mean

The first two letters name the side of the door that carries the indicator: OS is the outside, IS the inside. The rest names the message. OCC reads OCCUPIED or VACANT, LOC reads LOCKED or UNLOCKED. On the L Series parts page LOCKED and OCCUPIED are white text on red, UNLOCKED and VACANT black text on white.

IS-LOCLOCKED or UNLOCKEDInside
OS-DND, IS-DNDDO NOT DISTURB (L Series)Outside, inside
OS-SYM, IS-SYMLocked or unlocked symbols only (L Series)Outside, inside

For an L9000 lock with an indicator on both sides, the price book asks for the outside code first and the inside code second, so a dual order reads OS-OCC IS-LOC. The ND table also lists French versions ending in FR, such as OS-OCCFR; the B500 and B600 tables give an FR code only for LOCKED or UNLOCKED (IS-LOCFR, OS-LOCFR).

L9000 mortise locks: which functions take an indicator

Schlage calls the current option Gen 2 L9000 indicators and lists 180 degree visibility for rose or N-Escutcheon trim. Its function table splits the L9000 functions like this:

  • Outside, inside or dual: the L9040, L9044, L9440 and L9444 privacy functions, L9050, L9056, L9060, L9071, L9456, L9457, L9458, L9466, L9473, L9480 and L9485
  • Outside only: L9070 classroom and L9465 closet or storeroom lock
  • No indicator: functions marked N/A, such as L9010 passage, L9080 storeroom and L9453 entrance or office with deadbolt

For the mortise deadbolts the table reads: L9460, L9462, L9463, L460, L462 and L463 take outside, inside or dual indication, L9464 and L464 outside only, L480 inside only.

Schlage prints conditions next to the table. All indicators require additional door preparation. They are not available with the ligature resistant trims SL1, SK1 and HSLR. On L9040 and L9440 the indicator includes the L583-689 emergency thumbturn tool. For that preparation Schlage publishes an L-Series Gen2 Indicator Door Template Index, a list of template numbers by function for sectional and escutcheon trim. The L480 is not on that list.

L583-363 is a thumbturn, not an indicator

In product names L583-363 can sit right after the indicator code, as in our L9456-L-06A-626 OS-OCC L583-363. In the price book it is the large ADA thumbturn. The option is written 09-509 x L583-363. Schlage does not offer it with the L9463 or L463 functions or with SK1, SL1 or HSLR trim. Under ADA thumbturns for sectional trim, the price book says to use 09-509 x L583-363 for 612 or 613 finishes and to specify it for thick door applications.

Indicator kits sold as parts

For rose trim the price book lists Gen 2 sectional indicator kits by message. In this selection the first number reads LOCKED or UNLOCKED, the second OCCUPIED or VACANT:

KitLOCKED; OCCUPIED
Cylinder, inside or outside47804351; 47804352
ADA thumbturn, inside47804357; 47804358
Large ADA thumbturn (L583-363), inside47804363; 47804364
Coin turn, outside47804369; 47804370
Privacy emergency turn, outside47804375; 47804376

The finish code follows the kit number, as in 47804376 626, and the privacy emergency turn kits include the L583-689 tool. For the door preparation a kit may need, the parts page refers to Schlage's installation instructions. N-Escutcheon kits for the outside of the door have their own numbers for each lever.

ND Series: one side only

On ND cylindrical locks the indicator is an escutcheon trim, and Schlage says its message runs the full width of the lock at a height of 0.6 inch. The price book adds that it uses the standard ND door prep, comes configured or as a retrofit kit, and is one-sided only. It fits 1-3/4 inch doors; spacer plates sold separately extend the range to 1-3/8 to 1-11/16 inch, and Schlage's ND outside indicator instructions list spacer kits 48029970 (1-3/8 to 1-1/2 inch), 48029971 (1-1/2 to 1-5/8 inch) and 48029972 (1-5/8 to 1-11/16 inch). Schlage asks for the hand on indicator trim orders and defaults to RH; hand codes are explained in our door handing chart.

  • Outside only: ND40 bath or bedroom privacy, ND44 hospital privacy, ND52 keyed privacy, ND55 entrance with automatic unlocking, ND73 corridor
  • Outside or inside: ND50 entrance or office, ND53 entrance
  • Inside only: ND91 and ND92 Vandlgard locks
  • Inside, IS-CRS only: ND78 and ND98 classroom security, a message Schlage describes as including key operating instructions for teachers

B500 and B600 deadbolts

Deadbolts use the same four codes with single or dual indication, and the B500 page says that, unless a row is marked otherwise, single indication trim can go on either side. Locks ordered with indication require a 2-1/8 inch bore. Schlage asks for the function with the indicator code noted as a special option; the functions are compared in our deadbolt types guide.

  • B500, single or dual: B560 single cylinder, B562 double cylinder, B572 door bolt with coin turn
  • B500, single only: B561 cylinder x blank plate, B563 classroom; B581 door bolt with trim is inside only
  • B600, single or dual: B660, B662, B672; B661 and B663 take outside indication only

Schlage's L Series how-to-order page asks for the values in the sequence it shows, separated by periods, with the indicator in its own option field. Our product names write the same values with spaces or hyphens. The number in the heading reads:

A longer name, L9456-L-17A-626 OS-OCC/IS-LOC L583-363, is a corridor lock with deadbolt. L in the cylinder position is the price book's code for less conventional cylinder, 17A the 17 (Sparta) lever on rose A, OS-OCC and IS-LOC the dual indicator, OCCUPIED or VACANT outside and LOCKED or UNLOCKED inside, and L583-363 the large ADA thumbturn. For a lock body alone, see our L9000 lock body guide.
