The door schedule calls for PM453 on the entries, PC80 on the storerooms and PT40 on the restrooms, and the next page lists ND and L9000 locks. PM, PC and PT are the three lines of Schlage's Performance Series. Each number is built from fields in a set order.
PM, PC or PT: mortise, cylindrical or tubular
Schlage puts the lock type and the grade in each series name: PM Series Grade 1 mortise locks, PC Series Grade 1 cylindrical locks and PT Series Grade 2 tubular locks. Its series page describes the PC for high-traffic interior or exterior doors and the PT for lighter-duty interior doors, such as resident units, guestrooms and offices.
| Series | Lock type | Functions |
|---|---|---|
| PM | Mortise | 26, three electrified |
| PC | Cylindrical | 8 |
| PT | Tubular | 4, none keyed |
The grade has fine print: the PM cut sheet rates security at Grade 2 with full size interchangeable cores (FSIC) and Grade 3 with small format cores (SFIC), and the PC cut sheet lists some latches, 2-3/8 inch backsets among them, as Grade 2.
How to read a PM number
Schlage's price book lists the values in a fixed sequence, separated by periods: brand, series and function, cylinder (keyed functions only), lever, rose or escutcheon, finish and hand. Armor front, strike, door thickness, monitoring, options and keying follow when needed. The book's example is SCH.PM050.P6.RHO.A.626.RH.09-663.10-072.1-3/4.
- Series and function. The PM cut sheet reads the first digit after PM as 0 (no deadbolt), 1 (dummy trim) or 4 (with deadbolt); the function code follows.
- Electrified. PM090, PM091 and PM092 add EL (electrically locked) or EU (electrically unlocked), which the price book calls fail safe and fail secure. A switch on the case changes the mode in the field, but Schlage still asks for EL or EU on the order (our fail safe vs fail secure guide).
- Lever, three letters: ATH Athens, BRW Broadway, LAT Latitude, LON Longitude, NEP Neptune, PLA Playa, RHO Rhodes, SEL Selena, TLR Tubular, TWO Two.
- Trim, one letter after the lever: rose A, C or D, or N for the escutcheon.
- Finish: 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 643e aged bronze (see our finish codes chart).
- Hand: required for certain functions; if it is left off, Schlage's default is right hand, RH (see our door handing chart).
- Monitoring and options, on the functions that offer them: RX (request to exit) and LX (latch bolt monitor), or an indicator such as OS-OCC (outside, occupied or vacant). The price book does not allow indicators on electrified locks.
Cylinder codes, a selection from the PM cut sheet, which also lists M and the construction cores T, H and BDC:
| Code | Cylinder |
|---|---|
| P6 | 6-pin conventional (default) |
| P | 6-pin conventional, keyed 5 |
| Z | Everest SL 7-pin conventional |
| L | Less conventional cylinder |
| R | 6-pin FSIC |
| J | Less FSIC |
| G | 7-pin SFIC |
| B | Less SFIC |
Core formats: our SFIC vs LFIC guide. Three PM numbers from our catalog:
- PM453PRHON613: entrance/office lock with deadbolt, P cylinder, Rhodes lever, N escutcheon, 613.
- PM092ELBRHON626RX: electrically locking outside lever with outside cylinder (EL), less SFIC, Rhodes, N escutcheon, 626, request to exit.
- PM056LATHC613: the function decides how to split the letters. PM056 is keyed, so L is the cylinder code (less conventional cylinder), then ATH Athens, C rose, 613. On the non-keyed PM010, LAT would be the Latitude lever.
How to read a PC number
The PC sequence is brand, series and function, cylinder, outside lever, outside rose and finish: SCH.PC80.P6.RHO.RHO.626, where the second RHO is the rose. An inside lever or finish is added only when it differs from the outside one, or when the lock is ordered less a component. The book lists one rose for every PC lever, Rhodes (RHO), and its product identification example leaves the rose out. So do the PC numbers in our product names.
Functions: PC10 passage latch, PC40 bath/bedroom privacy lock, PC50 entrance/office lock, PC53 entrance lock, PC70 classroom lock (exterior lockdown only), PC80 storeroom lock, and the PC170 and PC172 dummy trims. Levers: ATH, BRK Boardwalk, BRW, LAT, LON, RHO, SPA Sparta and TLR. The cylinder letters match the PM list, plus five codes for Sargent and Corbin Russwin cylinders and cores (L-SA, J-SA, L-CO, J-CO6, J-CO7), which the PC cut sheet limits to certain levers and excludes from the PC70. Schlage marks PC10, PC40 and PC80 as available with request to exit (RX).
- PC10-RHO-622: passage latch, no cylinder, Rhodes lever, matte black.
- PC70-B-RHO-622: classroom lock, less SFIC, Rhodes, 622.
- PC80-P6-LAT-626 C: storeroom lock, standard 6-pin cylinder, Latitude, 626. The C our name adds stands for the Schlage C keyway; the price book's default is S123.
How to read a PT number
PT numbers are the shortest. The price book's example, SCH.PT10.RHO.A.626, has no cylinder field, and all four functions are non-keyed: PT10 passage latch, PT40 bath/bedroom privacy lock, PT170 single dummy trim and PT172 double dummy trim. The PT takes the PM's ten lever codes and roses A, C and D. According to the PT cut sheet, the C and D roses fit a 2-1/8 inch bore, the standard prep, and the small A rose a 1-7/8 inch cross bore. PT10RHOC626: passage latch, Rhodes lever, C rose, 626.
Performance Series next to L9000 and ND
The function codes will look familiar. The price book gives PM010 and PM050 the same names as L9010 (passage latch) and L9050 (entrance/office lock), and PC10, PC53 and PC80 the same names as ND10, ND53 and ND80. Same words, separate series. Each line has its own cut sheet and templates, and Schlage's PM product page notes that PM and L Series case and cover holes differ.
Where the series meet is styling. According to the PM product page, all PM levers coordinate with the PT, and eight of them with Schlage's broader offering (L, ND, ALX and PC Series). Six PM lever codes, ATH, BRW, LAT, LON, RHO and TLR, also appear in the PC lever list. For parts of an existing L9000, see our L9000 lock body guide; ND and L numbers are in our Schlage numbers guide.
Choosing function, lever and finish
- Lock type: mortise, cylindrical or tubular (our door lock types guide).
- Function: compare how each lever behaves in our lock functions guide.
- Cylinder: P6 by default; L, J and B order the lock less cylinder or less core.
- Lever, trim and finish: PM and PT share ten levers and the A, C and D roses, the PC has eight levers on the Rhodes rose, and all three use the same six finishes.
