Selby Wall Bed and Storage Bed Mechanisms: Which Kit, Which Document

Selby Furniture Hardware offers counterbalance mechanisms for wall beds (Murphy beds) and gas spring mechanisms for storage beds. This guide shows how Selby's tables match a kit to a bed and which Selby page and document go with the numbers in our titles.

Selby wall bed (Murphy bed) mechanisms: vertical or horizontal

Selby sells a Vertically Descending Wall Bed Mechanism (XSMVO numbers) and a Horizontally Descending Platform Bed mechanism (XSMHO numbers). The horizontal page says: "The horizontal or side opening wall bed is perfect for rooms that have limited space for bed projection."

In Selby's tables, numbers ending in I are listed as Concealed, those ending in X as Exposed. The horizontal page describes concealed mounting "inside the bed frame" and the other choice "on the outside of the bed frame for easy access"; the vertical page says concealed mechanism systems save an additional 3.4 inches of wall space.

XSMVO vertical kits: bed size, Lbs / Kg, cabinet opening

Each size comes concealed or exposed: XSMVO3950I and XSMVO3950X (Twin/Single), XSMVO5475I and XSMVO5475X (Double/Full), XSMVO54110I and XSMVO54110X (Queen). From Selby's vertical page:

The Wall Bed Mechanisms sheet (PDF) repeats the sizes and Lbs / Kg, not the cabinet opening. Its bullet list says "Maximum lift capacity: 244 lbs.", while its table tops out at 240/110. It lists the kit as adjustable counter balance mechanisms, pivot mounting mechanism plates, pivoting legs and hardware fasteners, notes "Mechanisms are handed." and lists the XWRENCH "For adjusting bed tension (sold separately)".

XSMHO horizontal kits

Selby lists XSMHO90I and XSMHO90X at 110 / 50 and XSMHO140I and XSMHO140X at 165 / 75. On the product page the 110 / 50 kits are the Twin/Single options and the 165 / 75 kits the Double/Queen options; it says the range accommodates "platform weights from 110 pound to 165 pounds". It gives no cabinet opening.

Selby storage bed lift mechanisms: X22400

On Selby's Storage Bed Mechanisms page, gas spring bed storage mechanisms "have preset weight capacities", and the mechanism "opens with a lateral movement away from the headboard or wall". The X22400 instructions (PDF) say the platform may open "from an end or the side of the bed" and the mechanism "is intended for installation in an existing base or pedestal".

First figure: the product page's "Lift" column; second: the "Capacity" column on page 2 of the instructions. For X22400S and X22402S they differ, and our titles use the instruction figures. Ask us which applies before ordering.

Page 2 also has an item selection guide: add the weight of your mattress to your platform weight, or to 77 pounds for a twin, 100 pounds for a double or 115 pounds for a queen size platform, "based on birch HWPW and yellow birch lumber weights". It adds: "Mattress weights vary significantly based on size, style, type and model".

X8000 complete storage bed platforms

Selby's Complete Storage Bed Solution with Frame and Slats (X8000) pairs the mechanism with a black powder coated steel frame and wood slats. The page says: "Platform and mattress weight combined will, ideally equal the lift capacity."

The X-8000 Bed Platform guide (PDF) gives the same rated lift for X-8001 to X-8007, but 165 Lbs for the X-8009 (76 x 80 E. King). Two of its other rows:

Page 3 notes: "The gas struts used to assist the lifting function have a narrow effective weight range and may not function before a load is in place."

Bed rail fasteners and bed fittings

Selby's Bed Rail Fasteners K744U, K745U and K746U are the 4", 5" and 6" lengths, "Sold in sets of 4". The Extra Heavy Duty Corner Joints K6510011 are "supplied in sets of 8 pieces (four corners)" for wood pieces 4 to 8 inches wide.

• X22400 instructions and X-8000 guide: "Children must not operate this mechanism without adult supervision."
• Selby's Install - Uninstall - Adjust instructions (PDF), linked on both wall bed pages: "Wall cabinets must be securely fastened to a structural wall that is plumb and square to the floor." "Your local or State government may require installation to be completed by a licensed contractor." "Installation must comply to local and State building codes that may apply."
• Selby's wall bed site, selbybed.com: "The Type SM mechanism kits are not intended for the DIY hobbyist and are sold exclusively for fabrication and installation by trade professionals."
