Replacing a Selby Lid Stay or Lid Hinge: Straight, Curved, Delta and Spring Balanced Stays

To replace a lid stay or a lid hinge from Selby Furniture Hardware, you need the type of stay, its hand, its length and its finish, and for a lid hinge the offset. This guide collects what Selby's product pages state for its straight, curved, Delta and spring balanced stays and its no-mortise lid hinges, and links our Selby parts.

Which lid stay do you have? Four Selby stay types

Selby's Stays and Lid Supports collection lists 24 products. This guide covers four stay families from it, which Selby describes like this:

• Straight Locking Stays: "adjustable tension slotted sliding stays with fingertip flywheel tightening".
• Curved Locking Stays: an "Adjustable tension sliding quadrant stay with finger-tip flywheel control", made of steel.
• Delta Lid Supports and Stays: a die cast, nickel plated zamak stay whose brackets "are fastened to the cabinet separately and then snap onto the fitting".
• Cantilevered Spring Balanced Stay: an all steel stay "For mirrored vanity tops and overhead storage."

Lid stay hand and length: what Selby prints

In Selby's words, the straight stays are "unhanded and reversible", the curved stays are "Handed, lefts and rights", the Delta "Functions as both Left or Right Handed", and the S1404575W is "Handed, sold in pairs of lefts and rights". Selby's pages do not explain how to tell a left-hand stay from a right-hand one, so if you are not sure which hand you need, contact us before you order.

Straight and curved locking stays: sizes, finishes and numbers

Selby offers the straight locking stay in 7 and 10 inch sizes with an antique bronze, brass plated or nickel finish. Its list of versions is S1877D and S18710D (antique bronze, 7 and 10 inch), S1877P and S18710P (brass, 7 and 10 inch) and S18710N (nickel, 10 inch). In these examples the number carries the length (7 or 10) and ends in a finish letter. On our store: the S1877P straight lid stay, 7 inch, brass.

The curved locking stay is 6-1/4 inches long. Selby lists S259LHD and S259RHD in antique bronze, S259LHL and S259RHL in bronze, and S259LHP and S259RHP in polished brass (the description calls this finish Brass Plated). In that list, LH numbers are the left-handed versions and RH numbers the right-handed ones. On our store: the S259LHP left-hand curved lid stay and the S259RHP right-hand curved lid stay, both brass.

Delta lid supports: lid weight, opening angle and brackets

The Delta stay is 8 inches long overall. Selby's page says it is "for lids up to 20 lbs" and adds: "Lighter lids require only one stay." The page does not say how light a lid must be for one stay, so note how many stays the lid has now. From the same page:

• Lift-up or drop-down: Selby lists it as "Convertible! Lift Up or Drop Down" and says it "Reverses tension direction from lift-up to drop-down function."
• Holding: "Sliding and braking action is adjustable to hold at intermediate positions."
• Opening angle: adjustable from 75 to 90 degrees by relocating the brackets; Selby adds that the angle varies with the type of hinge used.
• Holes: "All holes are on 32mm centers and can be placed either 28mm or 32mm from the leading edge for users of the 32mm combination drilling system."

Selby lists the brackets as separate parts: the Straight Bracket (SDELTABKT) and the Right Angle Bracket (SDELTABRKT90). The same page lists SDELTABULK (3 Lid Support/Stays) and SDELTAHD3, a heavy duty reversible lid support; those two are in Selby's range. The Delta parts on our store are the SDELTA lid stay, the SDELTABKT straight bracket and the SDELTABRKT90 right angle bracket.

Cantilevered spring balanced stay S1404575W

Selby's Cantilevered Spring Balanced Stay is all steel with a baked white epoxy finish and, according to Selby, raises 75 degrees. The page lists "Adjustable tension" and "Easy lid removal and adjustable with keyhole slots", and describes the stay as "Handed, sold in pairs of lefts and rights". On our store it is the S1404575W lift-up spring lid support. If you need to know whether one stay or a pair is included, ask us before you order.

No-mortise lid hinges: 5/8 or 3/4 inch offset

Selby's Non-Mortise Lid Hinges open 195 degrees and, according to Selby, "are for use with lift lids, toy chests, piano benches and headboard storage compartments". They are made of steel with a brass or bronze finish, in these versions:

None of the Selby pages quoted in this guide mentions a safety standard or a child safety rating for these stays and hinges.

Before you order a replacement lid stay or lid hinge

• Stay type: straight locking, curved locking, Delta or cantilevered spring balanced. Selby's collection also lists other stays, such as the Silent Curved Sliding Stay and the Free Sliding Stays, which this guide does not cover.
• Hand: the curved stays come in left and right versions, and Selby sells the S1404575W in pairs of lefts and rights; Selby describes the straight stays as "unhanded and reversible" and says the Delta "Functions as both Left or Right Handed".
• Length: 7 or 10 inch straight, 6-1/4 inch curved, 8 inch Delta.
• How many stays the lid has now and, for a Delta stay, the lid weight compared with Selby's "for lids up to 20 lbs".
• If you are replacing a Delta bracket: straight (SDELTABKT) or right angle (SDELTABRKT90).
• Finish: in the Selby lists above, D is antique bronze, L bronze, P brass and N nickel; the S1404575W is white epoxy.
• For a lid hinge: 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch offset or the double crank version, and brass or bronze.
