Sargent, Corbin Russwin, ACCENTRA and Arrow Indicator Locks: Vacant and Occupied Codes and Retrofit Indicator Kits

A restroom, office or classroom door already has a mortise lock, and now the building wants a window showing Vacant or Occupied to the corridor. You can order a new lock with the indicator or, on the locks named below, add a retrofit kit. Sargent, Corbin Russwin, ACCENTRA and Arrow write both as short codes such as V20, V01 or SC190.

What V10, V20, V01 and V21 mean on a mortise lock indicator

The Sargent 8200 and Corbin Russwin ML2000 catalogs and the ACCENTRA price book for 8800 mortise locks print the same V codes, each one giving the wording, the color and the side of the door. Single indicators:

Vacant/Occupied appears only on the outside in these lists. Codes with an F, such as V20F, carry French wording, and EMA, EMB and EMC order engraving of the word Lock with an arrow on the outside, inside or both sides. Sargent's order examples put the code first (V04 8238 O L RH 26D), Corbin Russwin's last (ML2002 NS A RH 626 V01). Our lock functions guide explains what each function does.

Cylindrical locks with an occupancy indicator: VSL trim and icon codes

Sargent's 10X Line catalog offers a shorter list: V30 and V60 outside, V03 and V06 inside and V33 and V66 on both sides, all with icons; V30, V03 and V33 are green and red, the others white and red. V77 and V88, both sides without icons, are for the 10XG51 keyed privacy indicator function only. The VSLL trim must be specified with the code: in V30 10XU65 VSLL LL RH 26D the window is outside and the inside gets LL trim. Our Sargent guide decodes the rest.

Corbin Russwin's CLX3300 Series with Status Indicator page lists the same six icon codes and an NVSL trim, as in the name CLX3320-N-VSL-626-V60. ACCENTRA's YPL and Arrow's APL privacy locks come with the indicator and no V code on their price book pages: YPL02 and APL02 have a coin turn override, YPL42 and APL42 an emergency key or tool override.

Retrofit indicator kits for a lock already on the door

Each mortise kit below covers one side of the door; windows on both sides take two kits.

Sargent 8200 and Corbin Russwin ML2000

Both catalogs offer these kits for existing applications only. A kit holds one indicator plate with mechanism, a screw pack, a plastic template and instructions; the order adds door thickness and V code. Corbin Russwin lists ML193 for ML2020, ML2030 and ML2060 with the window outside and ML194 for inside windows, while Sargent lists SA193 for its 65, 66 and 68 functions, outside. Kits ship with a default hand that the makers say must be field verified and adjusted as needed per the installation instructions (see our door handing chart). Sargent adds that its indicators can retrofit to 8200 locks made from 2002 to the present.

On escutcheon trim, Sargent's IS and Corbin Russwin's M31 trim kits bring levers and VN1 or VN escutcheons for both sides, and both makers need the function of the existing lock. Corbin Russwin also lists M19 sectional-trim-only indicators as packets by door thickness: for keyed functions on 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, 741F22 is the Vacant version (M19V) and 720F22 the Secure version (M19S).

ACCENTRA 8800, BEST and Schlage

ACCENTRA is the former Yale Commercial line, covered in our Yale and ACCENTRA guide. Its price book lists YA190, YA191 and YA192 for keyed functions, YA193 with a coin turn for emergency override, YA194, YA196 and YA198 for thumbturns and YA197 with no input; the example YA190 x RH x 626 x V01 reads kit, hand, finish and code. IND-K is listed for the 8802 and 8862 functions and CIND-K for the 8818-2, 8822 and 8832, sectional trim only.

For BEST, ACCENTRA offers BE190 for keyed functions, BE193 with a coin turn for emergency override and BE194 for thumbturns; for Schlage, SC190, SC193, SC194 and SC197 (no input, blank). Arrow's ABE and ASC kits carry the same descriptions, and Arrow's price book gives their limits: sectional trim only; H or R roses only on BEST; A, B, C, AVA or MER roses listed for Schlage; and no rose over 3-1/4 inch in diameter. Arrow's keyed kits come without a cylinder and accept a standard 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder. The BEST and Schlage kits take V10, V20, V30, V40, V50 or V60 (ACCENTRA adds V10F and V20F), ordered as SC190 x 626 x V10.

Indicator deadbolts and deadbolt retrofit kits

ACCENTRA's D100 and D200 deadbolts take V01, V04 or V01F inside, or V21, V54 or V21F on both sides; V21 is standard on the D291 and D292. For an installed deadbolt of a function the price book lists, AC201 is for fixed core cylinder deadbolts, AC202 for SFIC and AC203 for LFIC deadbolts (SFIC vs LFIC), with an outside window in V10, V40 or V10F. Arrow's E50 comes with a double indicator, V21 unless V54 is ordered. Arrow's AR201 kit for standard cylinders and AR202 for SFIC show Unlocked/Locked on the keyed side in V10 or V40, and the price book lists E41, E42, E50, E60, E64, D60 and D64 as not compatible.
