LifeSafety Power FPO Power Supplies: How to Read FPO150-B100C8D8PE4M and Find the Right Manual

The label inside the cabinet, or the power riser on a drawing, reads FPO150-B100C8D8PE4M, and you need to know what is in that box before you order a board or open a manual. LifeSafety Power's FlexPower Part Number Decoder reads such a number from left to right: power supply, boards, lock option, enclosure, backplate. Each board in that box has its own installation manual.

FPO150-B100C8D8PE4M, part by part

CodeWhat it isManual
FPO150150 W power supply: 12 A at 12 VDC or 6 A at 24 VDCFPO

D8PAuxiliary distribution, 8 outputs, Class 2D8

Two rules from the decoder page of LifeSafety Power's Access Power Catalog make the string readable. A P after a board code marks Class 2 power limited outputs, so the P here belongs to the D8, and the C8 has fused outputs. A digit in front of a code counts the boards: 2D8 means two D8 modules and 16 outputs. There is no lock option code (L2 to L8) in this number; the FlexPower Part Number Decoder lists the standard cam lock as the lock option without a code.

The catalog's Mercury page lists the 8-door dual voltage system in the E4M enclosure as FPO150-B100C8PD8PE4M, with Class 2 lock outputs, and notes that the part number can be changed to switch between fused outputs (C8, D8) and Class 2 outputs (C8P, D8P). For that system it gives 4 A at 12 VDC and 4 A at 24 VDC and panel mounting for up to four Mercury panels.

FPO150 power supply: the FPO manual

The FPO board is the power supply itself: 120 or 230 VAC in, 12 or 24 VDC out, set by a switch or jumper depending on the model. Its manual, the FlexPower Generation 2 DC Power System Installation Manual, covers the FPO75, FPO150 and FPO250, and every FPO reference in it means the Generation 2 family. If the board in your cabinet is not a Generation 2 FPO, check with LifeSafety Power which manual applies.

DC1 is the main output and is not affected by the fire alarm interface (FAI) input. DC2 can be controlled by the FAI input or used for continuous power. The maker's manuals page lists no manual for the enclosure or backplate; enclosure sizes and mounting steps are in the FPO manual. Inside it:

  • Quick start and Section 1: mounting, jumpers, LEDs and connectors, FAI input usage, typical wire routing, power-up checklist
  • Section 2: using the FPO with a NetLink network module
  • Section 3, pages 16-17: troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Section 4, pages 18-20: specifications, enclosure sizes, replacement parts
  • Appendices: tamper switch wiring and agency compliance requirements

B100: the second voltage

The B100 is what makes this a dual voltage system. Its manual describes a board that adds another voltage to a FlexPower system, either a fixed 12 V or an adjustable 5 to 18 V, with up to 4 A of Class 2 power limited output. Its input usually comes from the B1 buss, so the main supply's battery set also backs up the B100 and no second battery set is needed. In the catalog's dual voltage example, the FPO runs at 24 V on buss 1 and the B100 supplies 12 V on buss 2.

The manual also covers sizing. It puts the B100's input power at 1.15 times its output power, and one of its examples, 1 A at 12 V plus 3 A at 24 V, comes to 85.8 W and an FPO150.

C8 lock outputs and D8P auxiliary outputs

A C8 adds eight lock control zones to an FPO system. According to the C4, C4P, C8 and C8P manual, each zone input accepts a voltage, a relay contact or an open collector, and each output can be set for FAI operation, fail safe or fail secure, and voltage or relay contact output. Six color-coded jumpers per zone, A to F, make those choices and pick the voltage buss; the Common Jumper Settings chart shows typical combinations. Our fail safe vs fail secure guide explains the two lock modes.

The D8P has no built-in control features. Its manual describes eight zones of fused or PTC protected distribution, fed from one or two power inputs, with a jumper on each output to pick the input. In a dual voltage system this gives 12 V or 24 V output by output, but not FAI control: the manual says the D8 and D8P do not support FAI in a dual voltage application and names the F8 or F8P boards for that case.

Reading other LifeSafety Power configuration numbers

  • FPO75-B100C4PE1M: an FPO75 (75 W, 6 A at 12 VDC or 3 A at 24 VDC), a B100, a C4P with four Class 2 lock outputs, and an E1 enclosure (14 x 12 x 4.5 in.) with a Mercury backplate.
  • FPO150/250-2C82D8PE8M2: an FPO150 and an FPO250, which the catalog's example calls typically 12 V and typically 24 V, two C8 boards, two D8P boards, and the E8 enclosure (36 x 30 x 6.5 in.) with the Mercury backplate the catalog lists as E8M2 for 16 doors.
  • A 1 after the backplate letter, as in E6M1: the catalog uses it for door mount, on select backplates only.
  • /E at the end: the FPO manual says these models are factory preset for 230 VAC.

Where to download the LifeSafety Power manuals

The maker's Installation Manuals page also lists the M8, F8 and NetLink manuals, and its Catalogs page carries the Access Power Catalog.

Before anyone opens the cabinet

The FPO manual says installation and service should be performed only by qualified service personnel and should conform to all local codes. The B100, C4/C8 and D8 manuals each say to remove all AC and battery power from the FPO system before a board is added or replaced. Wiring, jumper settings and fire alarm connections follow those manuals and your local code.
